Let’s share something interesting. Recently, the Home & Patio Show came to town. Walking around there have been dozens of various projects that look so tempting to invest in. Some people turn to windows and siding – both good choices for shoring up your home. Other projects, though, like that fantastic deck or perhaps that workshop shed, seem very tempting. If you are thinking about these types of spring projects, our team needs to be a part of the process.
Why Do We Care About Your Spring Work?
At Wheaton Insurance, we are quite dedicated to helping you to protect your home. Most people want to make their home a unique space, one that fits their needs. While you can do whatever you desire in most cases, there are a few things we need to tell you about first.
We Highly Encourage You to Vet Your Contractors
It does not directly impact your home insurance, but it can later when you need to make a claim. If that deck falls apart, it may be due to poor workmanship. We may not be able to provide a full claim for you. Minimize these risks with the right licensed and insured contractors.
Recognize the Value of the Project on Your Home Insurance Coverage
Your standard home insurance policy includes two components mainly. Coverage A – Dwelling Insurance covers the structure itself. Coverage B – Other Structures covers other structures on your property. This includes garages, sheds, and decks. Coverage B’s value is 10% of Coverage A’s value. Look at that number. Is it more than the value of the projects you’re installing? If not, let us know so we can work to adjust it.
Let Us Add New Structures to Your Policy
For your home insurance to cover, for example, that gazebo you are building or your outdoor kitchen, we need to know it is there. We encourage you to call us and inform us that you’ve made this type of investment. Do this for any larger structure added to your home. This helps protect you from a lack of coverage later.
Always Tell Us About Pools
Pools are a high liability risk. They cause many visitors to your home to slip and fall or suffer other injuries. They can also be a cause of death to wandering children. We’re happy to offer advice on minimizing these risks. At the same time, we need to consider how much liability insurance you have. It needs to be enough to cover these risks.
If It Has to Do with Fire, We Need to Know
The same is true about any type of addition to your home that has to do with fire. This includes things like fire pits, outdoor kitchens, outdoor pizza ovens, or any other system you are adding. It’s important that we know these are present too, again, ensure you have enough liability insurance. Fire causes injuries, and when those injuries occur to people visiting your home, you could be liable for them. We aim to minimize these claims by ensuring you have a safe structure.
We Make Updating Your Policy Easy
Don’t worry – it does not have to be a challenge to make these changes to your home insurance policy. If you’ve been to the home show, loved what you saw, and are sketching out plans, we want to know about them. Give us a clue as to how you’re modifying your home to make it a better fit for you.
